A Mark on the History of Ilocos Sur

President Elpidio Quirino is regarded as a great pride of Ilocos Sur to the extent that an honorary day was declared in order to commemorate him. Elpidio Quirino was born in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur on November 16, 1890, he is the third child of Gregoria Rivera and Mariano Quirino. His early education consisted of private and public schools in La Union and Ilocos Sur and continued to persevere under financially stressful conditions. Basing from his biography, it is not inaccurate to infer that he lived a humble life as a Filipino, and as a bigueño.

Before being elected and renowned as the 6th President of the Philippines, he worked as a teacher to support his family and later received his law degree and passed the board examination in 1915. His official career in politics began with his job as a law clerk for the Philippine Commission. He was the representative of Ilocos Sur for a few years in the 1920s and pursued his career as a senator in his later years in the 1930s. As a the vice president, he assumed the role of president after adopting this role from the late Manuel Roxas and served 6 years. As the new President of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino focused on post-war recovery and expansion due to the given circumstances after WW2.

Having experienced humble beginnings and hardships among disasters and issues of the nation, Elpidio Quirino empathized and devised plans and layouts to support the infrastructure of the Philippines - a true mark of newfound independence, leadership, and a bright hope to develop a new era for the nation. A crucial or critical point in his term as president is oppurtunity - the oppurtonity or chance to rise up for the lower-end parts of his nation, a mark on history that led to social development and peace among the pristine lands of the Philippines. Education was also a crucial step in providing opportunities to all Filipinos who strive for more, thus encapsulating the true meaning of being a Bayani and a North Star for his people.
