The Values of Amber and Stone: Preserving our Heritage

The Values of Amber and Stone: Preserving our Heritage

This October, we commemorate the rich heritage, wisdom and resilience of Indigenous Communities nationwide through the National Indigenous Peoples (IP) Month. Anchored on the theme "Weaving Culture, Enriching Future: Empowering Indigenous Communities as Bedrock of Sustainable Development, " this observance recognizes that indigenous cultures are living traditions that continue to shape our identity as a nation. Their stories, languages and practices are key threads in the diverse fabric of our society.

As a living example of the theme "Weaving Culture, Enriching Future", Wang Od, the last traditional mambabbatok of the Kalinga people, has devoted her full life to preserving the tradition of indigenous tattooing which was passed down through generations. Through her art, Wang Od continues to reflect the deep cultural knowledge, identity and history of her community which proves that indigenous practices remain relevant in the modern world today. By continuing to practice and teach batok to younger generations, Wang Ofd has empowered her community economically and culturally - turning an ancient knowledge into a source of pride and sustainable livelihood.

To truly enable Indigenous Communities means to protect their rights, to respect their ancestral domains and ensure their meaningful participation in development initiatives. It means giving them the platform to lead and be heard so that they can make development initiatives more inclusive and equitable. Their power strengthens our social cohesion while upholding the dignity of their culture.

In the end, weaving culture into our national progress will enrich our future as all Filipinos. By valuing Indigenous Peoples as partners in sustainable development, we build a future that is rooted in respect, diversity and shared responsibility. Let us celebrate IP Month not just as an act of recognition but as a commitment to nurture a just and sustainable society for generations to come.
